Brief examination of The Book of Enoch

 

The Book of Enoch, trans. by R.H. Charles [1917] (http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/index.htm) This book is part of Pseudepigrapha (falsely attributed to the named author) texts, being a much later work than the time of Enoch, and contradicting Scripture, though as with others, these error are mixed with Biblical Truth. The below are just a few contradictions of Scripture in the book of Enoch, which disallow it from being wholly inspired of God. 1:1 The words of the blessing of Enoch, wherewith he blessed the elect ⌈⌈and⌉⌉ righteous, who will be living in the day of tribulation, when all the wicked ⌈⌈and godless⌉⌉ are to be removed.	If all the wicked were removed in the tribulation, then there would be no need for Christ to rule the nations with a rod of iron, (Revelation 19:15) such as “whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. (Zechariah 14:17-18)
6:6 And they were in all two hundred; who descended ⌈in the days⌉ of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it.	Here, the problem is, that the Book of Enoch claims fallen angels named the mountain, Mount Herman, yet Mount Herman did not get its name before the flood, which was also known as as Sirion and Shenir (Deuteronomy 3:8-9). But after the Flood Baal worshipers named the mountain after their god "Baal-Herman" (Judges 3:3, 1st Chronicles 5:23). Likewise "Mount Peor," in association with the Moabite god "Baal of Peor" (Numbers 25:1-5). This anachronism provides more evidence that the book of Enoch was not penned by him, but is a later work.
6:7 And these are the names of their leaders: Sêmîazâz, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêêl, Kôkabîêl, Tâmîêl, Râmîêl, Dânêl, Êzêqêêl, Barâqîjâl, Asâêl, Armârôs, Batârêl, Anânêl, Zaqîêl, Samsâpêêl, Satarêl, Tûrêl, Jômjâêl, Sariêl. 8. These are their chiefs of tens.	Not even one is these 19 angels are found in Scripture, which absence is rather incongruous.
7:2 And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells:	Research finds that the translator, R. H. Charles, “was considered by some as an 'Enochian specialist,” and that “an ell is an old English measurement equivalent to 45 inches (Random House Webster's Dictionary). If this was indeed the measurement that Charles was referring to then that would make the giants just short of two miles high.” Reverend Richard Laurence, a professor of Hebrew at Oxford, produced the very first English translation of the Book of Enoch in 1821 which was translated directly from the three Ethiopic texts by a famous explorer named James Bruce who first uncovered them in 1773. His version states that the giants were three hundred cubits tall...A cubit is an ancient Hebrew measurement equivalent of the distance from the elbow to the tip of the fingers which was later standardized to be about 18 inches (or about 45 centimeters. 'McKenzie Dictionary of the Bible' and the 'New Concise Bible Dictionary'). This would make the giants about 450 feet tall. This is corroborated by The Book of Giants in The Dead Sea Scrolls by Wise, Abegg, and Cook, page 246. (http://atlantisonline.smfforfree2.com/index.php?topic=17256.0;wap2) Which is like the kind of nonsense seen in Jewish tradition, of which were are warned: Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. (Titus 1:14) Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. (1 Timothy 1:4)
8:1 And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields...3 Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun,	Neither Araqiel or Shamsiel are even listed in the list of evil angels in 6:8. nor is Azazel unless this is the same as Asael.
10:1 Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spake, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, 2 and said to him: 'Go to Noah and tell him in my name "Hide thyself!" and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come 3 upon the whole earth, and will destroy all that is on it...	Which contradicts Gn. 5:24 which states that Enoch was taken up to heaven, which was years before Noah was born.
10:4 ...the Lord said to Raphael: 'Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening 5 in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever,...	Here  the judgment of Azazel and that of others is presented in the context of the days of Noah. And in Scripture the devil Himself is chained and cast into the bottomless pit, not forever, but for 1,000 years before he is loosed to seduce the remaining wicked rebels into warring against the Lord and His people, and who then are killed, judged/sentenced and cast into the eternal Lake of Fire. (Rev. 20:10-15)
10:8 And the whole earth has been corrupted 9 through the works that were taught by Azazel: to him ascribe all sin.	"A common view of the azazel goat—sometimes translated as "scapegoat"—is that it represents Satan, on whose head the sins of humanity will be placed. However, the source of this interpretation is the apocryphal Book of Enoch. In the Book of Enoch, “Azazel” is the name of a demon blamed for all the sins of mankind (Enoch 10:8). He is not the chief demon—not actually Satan (Enoch 6:3; 9:7). (https://www.bibletools.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/topical.show/RTD/cgg/ID/20813/Book-Enoch.htm) Nowhere in Scripture are all sins placed upon any demon, but instead it was upon the Divine Son that God laid upon all man's sins, thanks be to God in Christ. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:6)
10:11 And the Lord said unto Michael: 'Go, bind Semjaza and his associates who have united themselves with women so as to have defiled themselves 12 with them in all their uncleanness. And when their sons have slain one another, and they have seen the destruction of their beloved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement and of their consummation,	Nowhere in Scripture is there only seventy generations till the day of judgment and of their consummation. Instead, Jude tells us of “the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” (Jude 6)
19:2 And the women also of the angels who went astray shall become sirens.'	“Sirens” (half-bird half-human) comes from later Greek mythology, and is nowhere in Scripture, and which provides more evidence that the book of Enoch was not penned by him, but is a later work.
